Sustainable Christmas: save energy with LEDs

Make Christmas more sustainable with LED lights

What would Christmas be without the warmth of lights? Whether you're decorating the tree, the house, or the garden, LED lights bring beauty, efficiency, and durability that traditional incandescent lights simply can't match.

In this article we explore why LED Christmas lights are more sustainable and popular than incandescent lights, based on data from lighting companies and European energy efficiency resources.

Why choose LED Christmas lights?

Efficient

When comparing energy usage between the two types of lights, LED Christmas lights consume approximately 70% to 90% less electricity than incandescent lights, with typical values ≥75% in quality products.

This lower consumption aligns with European ecodesign regulations for light sources: light strips and strings are within the scope if they meet the definition of ecodesign and "light source" (with verification over 50 cm for testing), while battery-powered ones are excluded.
Switching to LED lights reduces your bill and helps decrease your carbon footprint.

Durable

LED chips are designed for a lifespan of tens of thousands of hours (e.g., L70 at 25,000–50,000 h in general lighting). In contrast, incandescent bulbs typically last ∼1,000 h (up to 2,000 h in “long life” models).

Although in string lights the assembly may be limited by controllers, seals or connections, the materials used in this type of string light make it less likely to break when used for more than one season because the plastic and encapsulated materials of LED string lights reduce breakage compared to the glass and filament of incandescent lights.

Brighter and more stable colors

LED technology maintains brightness and sharpness for longer and minimizes loss of intensity, and although there may be slight chromatic drift over the years, it is much less than the typical darkening due to aging in incandescent strings.

Whether you prefer classic white lights, warmer yellow-orange tones, or opt for bolder multicolor effects, LED lights are designed to retain their brightness year after year.

Safer indoors and outdoors

Incandescent bulbs dissipate much of their energy as heat (≈90%), increasing the risk of burns and fire on trees and garlands; LEDs operate much cooler, improving safety, as manufacturers emphasize, and avoid the extreme risk of incandescent bulbs.

For outdoor use, look for products with IP44–IP65 or higher and protect connections with RCD/GFCI devices, which are specific models designed for outdoor use and thus mitigate risks from rain, snow and humidity.

More sustainable (eco-friendly) Christmas lighting

Lower energy consumption and a longer lifespan make LED lights a greener option, contributing to the EU's energy saving and energy labeling objectives for light sources, ideal for those who care about the environment.

Choosing high-efficiency LED Christmas light sources also contributes to national energy-saving goals, supporting policies that aim to reduce overall electricity demand and associated emissions.

LED Christmas lights are not just fashionable: they are efficient, durable and safe for your decorations, and they help you save on your electricity bill.

Eco-tips for this Christmas

If you want your Christmas decorations to be more efficient and safe, here are some simple ideas you can apply.

  • Install timers, motion detectors, thermal sensors or photocells to avoid unnecessary lighting.
  • Program the interior and exterior lighting according to the natural light cycle with smart timers.
  • Duck dimmers or light dimmers to create a welcoming atmosphere and reduce consumption.
  • In fluorescent lighting fixtures it uses T5 tubes, much more efficient than the T8 or T12.
